SAP ECC Modules FAQ

What is SAP ECC?

SAP ECC (ERP Central Component) is SAP's on-premise ERP suite that preceded S/4HANA. It covers finance, manufacturing, supply chain, HR, procurement, and asset management for large enterprises, and remains widely deployed in manufacturing, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, and automotive. SAP's mainstream support for ECC ends in 2027, so most customers are now planning a migration to S/4HANA.

What does ECC stand for in SAP?

ECC stands for ERP Central Component, the technical name for the on-premise SAP ERP suite that most people simply call "SAP ECC." It is the predecessor product to S/4HANA, SAP's current ERP platform.

Does SAP S/4HANA replace ECC?

Yes. S/4HANA is SAP's designated successor to ECC, built on the in-memory HANA database with a redesigned data model. SAP has set 2027 as the end of mainstream support for ECC, which is why most existing ECC customers are actively planning or executing a migration to S/4HANA rather than staying on ECC indefinitely.

What is the difference between SAP ECC and S/4HANA?

ECC is an on-premise-only, monolithic ERP suite running on traditional databases, while S/4HANA is built on SAP's in-memory HANA database and is available on-premise or in the cloud. S/4HANA also simplifies ECC's data model and adds embedded analytics. Functionally the two cover similar ground — finance, manufacturing, supply chain, HR — but S/4HANA is the platform SAP is actively developing.

Is SAP ECC cloud-based or on-premise?

SAP ECC is on-premise only — there is no cloud-native version of ECC. Organizations that want a cloud-hosted or cloud-native SAP ERP need to migrate to S/4HANA, which is available in public cloud, private cloud, and on-premise editions.

When does SAP ECC support end?

SAP has set 2027 as the end of mainstream support for ECC. After that date, customers still running ECC typically move to extended support at additional cost or complete their migration to S/4HANA. Given the long implementation timelines large ECC estates require, most enterprises are already well into migration planning rather than waiting for the deadline.
