Overview

Anaplan is a cloud-based connected-planning platform whose finance applications cover planning, budgeting and forecasting, long-range planning, financial consolidation and reporting, management reporting and analytics, and profitability analysis. It is built as an ERP-agnostic planning layer: rather than replacing the general ledger system of record, it centralizes financial data pulled from ERPs, operations, and sales systems into a single shared model that FP&A, business-unit, and executive teams work in together. Anaplan was founded in 2006, is headquartered in Miami, Florida, and has been privately owned by the private-equity firm Thoma Bravo since a roughly $10.4 billion take-private acquisition closed in June 2022 (Anaplan previously traded on the NYSE as PLAN following a 2018 IPO). The vendor reports over 2,600 customers and says roughly 48% of the Fortune 50 use the platform, including logos it features such as Coca-Cola, Unilever, LinkedIn, Generali, and Jaguar Land Rover.

The platform runs on a proprietary in-memory calculation engine that Anaplan describes as delivering deterministic, auditable calculations at enterprise scale, so changes made in one part of a model recalculate downstream impacts for many concurrent users rather than waiting on a batch refresh. Anaplan layers AI on top of this calculation core through what it calls intelligent, role-based agents (for example a Finance Analyst agent), which are marketed to automate routine analysis tasks, investigate variances, and trigger workflow reviews and approvals inside the planning model itself. For FP&A specifically, Anaplan was named a Leader in the 2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Financial Planning Software.

Anaplan connects to source systems through several documented mechanisms rather than a single named ERP connector: CloudWorks, the native integration service, ships built-in connectors for Snowflake, Amazon S3, Google BigQuery, and Azure Blob Storage; Anaplan Connect and the Anaplan API provide file-based and programmatic integration; an Excel Add-in gives read-write connectivity to spreadsheets; and the listed technology-partner ecosystem includes iPaaS vendors (Informatica, Dell Boomi, MuleSoft, SnapLogic) that customers commonly use to connect ERPs such as SAP, Oracle, and NetSuite. The Anaplan trust center lists SOC 1 Type 2, SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001/27017/27018/27701, CSA STAR Level 1, and several regional data-protection framework certifications (including the EU-US Data Privacy Framework).

  • Deterministic, auditable in-memory calculation engine that recalculates downstream impacts in real time for many concurrent users
  • ERP-agnostic connected-planning model that unifies FP&A with sales, supply chain, and workforce planning on one platform

Considerations

  • No native, vendor-certified ERP connector is documented; ERP connectivity runs through Anaplan Connect/APIs or third-party iPaaS partners (Informatica, Dell Boomi, MuleSoft, SnapLogic)
  • Pricing is quote-based and not publicly listed, making cost hard to estimate up front
  • As a planning layer it relies on integration to ERP/source systems rather than acting as the system of record
  • Enterprise-oriented platform that typically requires implementation partners and modeling expertise to build out
