How to choose an ERP consulting firm

“ERP consultant” covers four distinct roles, and knowing which you need narrows the search more than any other filter. Selection advisers run the pre-purchase phase: documenting requirements, scoring vendors against one common scenario, and managing the RFP so every bidder answers the same scope. Implementation consultants take over once a system is chosen — configuring, integrating, migrating data and training users. Technical and functional consultants are the two halves of an implementation team: integrations and custom code on one side, business logic for finance, inventory and manufacturing on the other. Independent consultants hold no reseller agreement with any vendor, so their fee is their only revenue from the engagement; see independent ERP consultants for how to verify an independence claim.

On cost: hourly rates run roughly $150–$350 in the US, day rates from $200 to over $1,000, and full projects from about $50,000 for a single-site deployment to several million for a multi-site enterprise rollout. Scope, system complexity, consultant seniority, resourcing model and the amount of customisation drive almost all of the variance — poorly scoped, heavily customised projects are where budgets overrun. The implementation cost breakdown shows where the money actually goes. We publish no invented “average” figure; costs vary too widely by context for one to mean anything.

Six questions worth asking every shortlisted firm: (1) Is the scope fixed-bid or day rate, and who owns scope risk? (2) Which of your consultants will actually be on this project, and are they employees or subcontractors? (3) Can you give two references at my company size in my industry — and may I ask them about delays and overruns, not just satisfaction? (4) What is your certified level on the specific product I am buying, and when was it last renewed? (5) Who runs change management and training, you or us? (6) Do you earn any commission from the vendor on this deal? The most common red flag is a reseller presenting itself as an independent adviser: a firm that only ever recommends the product it resells is not giving neutral selection advice.

Define requirements before you contact anyone, so every candidate bids against the same scope — the requirements builder and the Excel requirements template both produce a document you can send out unchanged. If you have not chosen a platform yet, hire selection help rather than a build team, and compare the systems first.

Frequently asked questions

What is an ERP consulting firm?

An ERP consulting firm helps a business select, implement, or optimise enterprise resource planning software. The work covers process assessment, requirements gathering, vendor selection and RFP management, system configuration, data migration, training, and post-go-live optimisation. Some firms are vendor-neutral advisers who only work the pre-purchase stages; most are certified to deploy one or more specific products, which is why this directory lists each firm's platform accreditations.

How much do ERP consultants cost?

Rates typically run $150–$350 per hour in the US, or roughly $200 to over $1,000 per day, with independent and boutique firms at the lower end and global integrators well above it. Full projects run from around $50,000 for a single-site deployment to several million dollars for a multi-site enterprise rollout. The main cost drivers are scope, system complexity, consultant seniority, onshore versus blended resourcing, and how much customisation you ask for.

What is the difference between a consultant, an implementation partner, and the software vendor?

The vendor builds and licenses the software. An implementation partner is certified to deploy one vendor's product and is paid by you, sometimes plus a vendor commission. A consultant is the broader term: it covers implementation partners as well as advisory firms that never touch configuration and are paid only by you. If you have not chosen a system yet, you probably need advisory help rather than a build team.

How do I verify a firm's partner certification?

Every listing here is cross-checked against the vendor's own partner records — partner finders, award announcements, and programme directories — before it appears, and each firm's profile shows the accreditation level we found. Ask a shortlisted firm for its partner ID and current tier, then confirm it on the vendor's public partner finder. Certification levels lapse, so check the date rather than trusting a logo on a website.

Which are the best ERP consulting firms?

There is no single best firm — the right one depends on your platform, industry, and project size. Start from the platform you are buying: browse the ecosystem you need, then filter by country, firm size, and service type. If you have not chosen a platform yet, an independent selection adviser is the better first call.

How do I find ERP consultants near me?

Use the country filter in the directory above, and the region filter to widen to a continent. Around a quarter of the firms listed publish no head-office location and show as “Location not listed” — those are excluded from the country filter rather than guessed at, so widen your search if a small country returns little.
