Overview

Billtrust is an accounts receivable (AR) automation platform covering the order-to-cash cycle: electronic invoice delivery, B2B payment acceptance, AI-driven cash application, credit management and collections. It is aimed at mid-market and large B2B organisations, particularly in manufacturing, distribution, equipment, medical, retail and transportation, that issue high volumes of invoices and want to automate the customer-facing financial workflows that ERPs typically leave manual.

The platform delivers invoices through email, its Buyer Payment Portal, 260+ AP portals, Peppol and e-invoice clearance networks, and print/mail. Its Cash Application module uses confidence-based, AI/ML matching to post payments against invoices automatically, escalating only low-confidence matches for manual review. Collections automation uses AI-driven workflows and, more recently, AI agents to manage dunning and customer follow-up at scale. Credit management adds predictive risk scoring to support credit decisions.

Billtrust connects to ERPs via a library of 40+ direct/certified connectors (including SAP ECC and S/4HANA, Oracle, NetSuite and Microsoft Dynamics) plus custom integration options, positioning itself as a bolt-on AR layer that keeps the ERP as system of record while automating invoicing, payments and cash posting around it. The company was acquired by EQT Private Equity in December 2022 in a deal valuing it at roughly $1.7 billion.

Common use cases

  • Automating electronic invoice delivery across email, AP portals and print for a high-volume B2B biller
  • Reducing manual cash application effort by auto-matching remittances to open invoices with AI
  • Running AI-assisted collections workflows to cut days sales outstanding (DSO) without adding headcount
  • Giving customers a self-service payment portal to accept card and ACH payments online
  • Adding predictive credit risk scoring ahead of extending new customer credit
  • Keeping AR automation in place through an SAP ECC-to-S/4HANA migration
  • Layering AR automation on top of an ERP (SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Dynamics) that lacks native invoice-to-cash capability

Strengths & considerations

Strengths

  • Full order-to-cash suite (invoicing, payments, cash application, collections, credit, eCommerce) on one platform rather than a single-point AR tool
  • Large distribution footprint with 260+ AP portal connections and Peppol/e-invoice clearance support for electronic invoice delivery
  • Confidence-based AI matching model for cash application designed to maximise straight-through processing and shrink the manual exception queue

Billtrust prices by quote like most of this category. Third-party review sites and users report $20,000 to $60,000 a year, rising significantly with invoice volume and payment processing fees, and enterprise suites in this space commonly exceed $75,000. The invoice-volume driver matters more than user count: a small AR team billing high volumes pays more than a large team billing few. Treat published ranges as directional — this is buyer-reported data, not a vendor price list. Get an independent shortlist with pricing guidance below.
