Dataverse is a shared data platform, Microsoft Purview handles cataloguing and governance, and Microsoft Fabric consolidates analytics — none of which is master data management in the operational sense of matching duplicate records, applying survivorship rules and publishing a governed golden record back into Dynamics.
The buyers who need real MDM in Dynamics landscapes generally arrive from consolidation: several Dynamics instances after acquisitions, or Dynamics alongside other systems with no agreed definition of a customer. Notably, one vendor below is built on the Microsoft stack specifically, which materially reduces integration effort for Dynamics-centric organisations — a legitimate reason to weight it in evaluation.
Dataverse provides a shared data platform underneath Dynamics 365 and Power Platform, with a common schema and security model that reduces duplication between Microsoft applications. Microsoft Purview adds data cataloguing, lineage and governance policy across your estate. List the specific master data management outcomes you need — volumes, workflows, countries, systems in the loop — and rank them. Vendor demos are optimised to reframe your requirements around their strengths; a written list keeps the evaluation yours.
Every vendor here “integrates with Dynamics 365” — the differences are in depth. Ask each to demo the integration against a realistic Dynamics 365 configuration: your entity structure, your fields, your transaction volumes, and what happens when a sync fails.
Look for Microsoft AppSource listing / ISV certification and a current listing on Microsoft AppSource. Certification doesn't guarantee fit, but it confirms the vendor keeps pace with Dynamics 365 releases — uncertified integrations are where upgrade breakage concentrates.
Ask for two reference customers on Dynamics 365 at your size and in your industry, and ask them what broke in the first year. Implementation quality varies more than product quality in the master data management category.
Compare subscription plus implementation plus internal effort — not headline price. Dynamics 365 master data management pricing models differ (per user, per volume, per entity), so normalise every quote to your actual usage before comparing.
No, and conflating them is a common and costly assumption. Dataverse reduces duplication between Microsoft applications by giving them a shared schema, which genuinely helps. It does not deduplicate records that already diverged, arbitrate between conflicting sources, or provide stewardship workflow. If you have three customer records for the same company across two Dynamics instances and a CRM, Dataverse does not resolve that; MDM does.
Bidirectionally, and the return path is the demanding half. Source records flow out for matching and enrichment; governed golden records flow back to update Dynamics masters, via Dataverse and OData for F&O or the BC API. Interrogate write-back carefully — many MDM implementations quietly become read-only reporting layers because nobody solved updating the operational system safely, which defeats the purpose entirely.
It can reduce integration effort and infrastructure overhead meaningfully for a Dynamics-centric organisation, and one vendor below is architected specifically that way. But do not let platform alignment outweigh functional fit: if your requirement is multi-domain governance across systems Microsoft has nothing to do with, the platform-native advantage shrinks quickly and you should evaluate on matching and stewardship capability instead.
