Best Demand Planning Software for Dynamics 365

Updated July 2026 · By the ERP Research Editorial Team · Independent and vendor-neutral — no vendor pays for placement or ranking.

Demand planning software for Dynamics 365 forecasts demand, calculates safety stock and plans replenishment using sales and inventory history from Supply Chain Management or Business Central. Microsoft has added a native Demand Planning capability to D365 Supply Chain Management; independents compete on forecasting sophistication, planning speed and mid-market affordability for Business Central users.

This category has moved recently. Microsoft added a modern Demand Planning capability to Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management, alongside the long-standing master planning engine, which raises the bar an independent platform has to clear for F&O customers. Evaluating native first is now genuinely worthwhile rather than a formality.

Business Central is a different conversation entirely. Its planning worksheets and reorder policies are static parameter-driven rather than statistical, and the mid-market tools built for BC — deploying in weeks at a few hundred pounds a month — solve a real problem cheaply. Note how sharply the vendors below split between enterprise platforms aimed at F&O and lightweight tools aimed at BC; buying across that divide is the classic error here.

What does Dynamics 365 plan natively?

Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management includes master planning for MRP and replenishment plus a newer Demand Planning capability offering statistical forecasting and forecast collaboration. For a single-instance F&O customer with reasonably stable demand, that combination is often sufficient. Business Central provides reorder policies, planning worksheets and requisition suggestions driven by parameters someone sets manually, with no statistical forecasting or automatic safety-stock calculation. Independents earn their place on forecast accuracy for difficult demand patterns, scenario planning speed, multi-echelon optimisation, and — for BC users — simply providing statistical planning at all.

How to choose Dynamics 365 demand planning

  1. 1

Write down your requirements before any demo

List the specific demand & supply planning outcomes you need — volumes, workflows, countries, systems in the loop — and rank them. Vendor demos are optimised to reframe your requirements around their strengths; a written list keeps the evaluation yours.

  2. 2

Verify Dynamics 365 integration depth, not existence

Every vendor here “integrates with Dynamics 365” — the differences are in depth. Ask each to demo the integration against a realistic Dynamics 365 configuration: your entity structure, your fields, your transaction volumes, and what happens when a sync fails.

  3. 3

    Check certification and marketplace status

Look for Microsoft AppSource listing / ISV certification and a current listing on Microsoft AppSource. Certification doesn't guarantee fit, but it confirms the vendor keeps pace with Dynamics 365 releases — uncertified integrations are where upgrade breakage concentrates.

  4. 4

Reference-check companies that look like yours

Ask for two reference customers on Dynamics 365 at your size and in your industry, and ask them what broke in the first year. Implementation quality varies more than product quality in the demand & supply planning category.

  5. 5

Model total cost over three years

Compare subscription plus implementation plus internal effort — not headline price. Dynamics 365 demand planning pricing models differ (per user, per volume, per entity), so normalise every quote to your actual usage before comparing.

Frequently asked questions

Is native Demand Planning enough for F&O customers?

Increasingly, for straightforward cases. Microsoft's investment here has narrowed the gap for single-instance customers with stable demand whose planners already live in Dynamics. The specialist case now needs to be specific: forecast accuracy on promotional or intermittent demand, concurrent scenario planning at speed, multi-echelon network optimisation, or planning across business units that will never share one D365 instance.

What should Business Central users buy?

Almost certainly one of the mid-market tools rather than an enterprise platform. BC's native planning is parameter-driven, so statistical forecasting and dynamic safety stock are genuine additions, and the mid-market vendors deploy in weeks at a price that fits BC budgets. An enterprise planning suite on a Business Central footprint is disproportionate in cost, implementation weight and ongoing administration.

How do planning tools integrate with Dynamics 365?

They read item master, sales history, stock, open orders and supplier lead times, then write back forecasts, planning parameters or suggested purchase orders. F&O connects via Dataverse and OData; BC via its API or an AppSource extension. Data quality drives results more than algorithm choice — inaccurate lead times produce confident, wrong recommendations — so budget cleanup time before go-live rather than discovering it after.
