Benefits is largely a US problem, and that shapes this category. SuccessFactors Employee Central Benefits handles global benefits reasonably, but US benefits administration — multiple carriers, ACA reporting, COBRA, dependent verification, evidence of insurability — is a specialised discipline that dedicated administrators have built decades of infrastructure around.
The decision therefore splits by geography more than by company size. Organisations whose benefits complexity sits mainly outside the US often stay native; US-heavy employers frequently use a specialist administrator regardless of what their core HR system can technically configure. Note too that some vendors below sell administration as a service rather than as software, which is a different purchase entirely.
What do SuccessFactors and SAP HCM cover?
SuccessFactors Employee Central includes benefits enrolment, eligibility rules, life-event handling and deduction feeds into payroll, on the same employee record as core HR. Legacy SAP HCM has a longstanding benefits module, particularly configured for US plans in on-premise landscapes. Both handle configuration and enrolment competently. What neither provides is the maintained library of carrier EDI connections, decision-support tooling that guides employees through plan selection, or specialised US compliance operations — ACA reporting, COBRA administration, dependent verification — that dedicated administrators run as an ongoing service rather than as software you configure.
