Best EDI for SAP

Updated July 2026 · By the ERP Research Editorial Team · Independent and vendor-neutral — no vendor pays for placement or ranking.

EDI for SAP exchanges standardised business documents — orders, ASNs, invoices — with trading partners and posts them into SAP as IDocs or API-based transactions. SAP provides the integration plumbing (IDoc framework, SAP Integration Suite) but not a full EDI service: translation, partner maps and VAN connectivity come from EDI providers.

SAP EDI is a forty-year-old discipline with a modern twist: the IDoc-based patterns that ran ECC landscapes for decades are migrating toward API- and Integration-Suite-based flows on S/4HANA, and your EDI provider choice should survive that transition. Retailer mandates, automotive EDIFACT flows and 3PL integration remain the daily bread.

Providers below range from fully managed EDI services to integration platforms with strong B2B/EDI capabilities. For SAP buyers the axis that matters most: who owns the SAP-side mapping (IDoc segments, partner profiles, error reprocessing) — you, the provider, or a systems integrator.

What does SAP provide natively for EDI?

SAP ships the framework: IDoc types for every standard document, partner profiles, and — in the modern stack — SAP Integration Suite with B2B capabilities on BTP. What SAP doesn't provide is the EDI service layer: trading-partner map libraries, VAN connectivity, retailer onboarding expertise and compliance monitoring. Almost every SAP EDI programme pairs SAP's framework with a provider; running raw EDI in-house is rare for good reasons.

What does EDI cost?

How to choose EDI for SAP

  1. 1

Write down your requirements before any demo

List the specific EDI outcomes you need — volumes, workflows, countries, systems in the loop — and rank them. Vendor demos are optimised to reframe your requirements around their strengths; a written list keeps the evaluation yours.

  2. 2

Verify SAP integration depth, not existence

Every vendor here “integrates with SAP” — the differences are in depth. Ask each to demo the integration against a realistic SAP configuration: your entity structure, your fields, your transaction volumes, and what happens when a sync fails.

  3. 3

    Check certification and marketplace status

Look for SAP-certified integration (SAP Store listing) and a current listing on SAP Store (store.sap.com). Certification doesn't guarantee fit, but it confirms the vendor keeps pace with SAP releases — uncertified integrations are where upgrade breakage concentrates.

  4. 4

Reference-check companies that look like yours

Ask for two reference customers on SAP at your size and in your industry, and ask them what broke in the first year. Implementation quality varies more than product quality in the EDI category.

  5. 5

Model total cost over three years

Compare subscription plus implementation plus internal effort — not headline price. EDI for SAP pricing models differ (per user, per volume, per entity), so normalise every quote to your actual usage before comparing.

Frequently asked questions

How does EDI integrate with SAP technically?

Classically via IDocs: the provider translates X12/EDIFACT into ORDERS, DESADV, INVOIC IDocs posted through partner profiles, with status flowing back the same way. On S/4HANA, API-based posting via Integration Suite increasingly replaces raw IDocs. Ask providers which pattern they run for S/4 specifically, and how error reprocessing works on the SAP side — that's where support burdens live.

Does an S/4HANA migration break existing EDI?

It shouldn't break IDoc-based flows — S/4HANA still supports IDocs — but it's the natural moment to rationalise: retire custom maps, move to Integration Suite patterns, and renegotiate provider contracts. Treat EDI as an explicit migration workstream with regression testing per trading partner; the projects that skip this discover chargebacks post-go-live.

Managed EDI or self-service for an SAP landscape?

SAP landscapes tip toward managed more than other ERPs — IDoc mapping expertise is scarcer than generic EDI skills, and SAP change cycles (transports, upgrades) demand coordinated testing. Self-service suits organisations with a standing SAP integration team and high partner churn. Either way, contract explicit SLAs on new-partner onboarding time.
