Overview

Appian Process Mining is the process-discovery and analytics capability built into the Appian AI automation platform. Appian now markets it as part of a broader "Process Intelligence" product family, with the in-app tool branded Process HQ; it is not sold as a stand-alone product but is bundled into the Advanced and Premium tiers of Appian's platform pricing (the entry-level Standard tier excludes it).

The capability reads event-log data through Appian's Data Fabric -- a virtual data layer that connects to source systems, including SAP-sourced record types, without a separate data migration -- and turns it into interactive process diagrams (with overview-to-full detail levels), KPI dashboards (automation rate, cycle time, on-time delivery, etc.), case-attribute and case-list views, and conformance checks against defined compliance rules. An AI Copilot layer lets users ask natural-language questions of a connected dataset, get suggested KPIs and views, and receive automatically generated written insight summaries.

Because it runs inside Appian's wider low-code platform rather than as a separate analytics tool, its main differentiator is a closed loop: once a bottleneck or non-conformant case pattern is found, the same platform's process modeler and automation/RPA tooling can be used to redesign and redeploy the fixed workflow without exporting findings to another system.

Common use cases

  • Analyzing an order-management process end-to-end to see automation rate, cycle time and bottleneck stages between purchase-order receipt and order close
  • Reducing the time between patient discharge and final invoicing in a hospital billing workflow
  • Identifying bottlenecks in an insurance quoting workflow to improve resource allocation and reporting to leadership
  • Finding unnecessary manual checks in a utility's back-office processes to reclaim working days
  • Investigating a claims-handling workflow and redesigning it directly in Appian's process modeler once inefficiencies are found
  • Monitoring compliance rules on a process and surfacing proactive recommendations against policy deviations
  • Letting a non-technical process owner ask an AI Copilot natural-language questions about a dataset instead of manually building a report

Strengths & considerations

Strengths

  • Built into a single low-code automation platform, so findings from process mining can be redesigned and redeployed with the same tool's process modeler and RPA/automation features rather than exported to a separate BPM system
  • Uses Appian's Data Fabric to connect to source systems -- including SAP-sourced record types visible in its own data-governance tooling -- without a separate ETL/data-migration step
  • AI Copilot lets business users query datasets and reports in natural language and receive auto-generated KPIs and insight summaries
  • Parent platform recognized as a Leader in the 2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Business Orchestration and Automation Technologies (BOAT)

Considerations

  • Not sold as a stand-alone product -- requires the Advanced or Premium Appian Platform tier; excluded from the Standard tier
  • AI Copilot for Data Fabric is capped at 1-300 configured record types per session and cannot perform its own numerical calculations
  • Process analysis is not available on Appian's Government Cloud deployment option

Alternatives to Appian Process Mining in Process Mining

Appian Process Mining — frequently asked questions

What is Appian Process Mining?

It is the process-discovery and analytics capability built into the Appian AI automation platform, marketed today as part of Appian's Process Intelligence product family and surfaced in-app as Process HQ. It mines event-log data to produce process diagrams, KPIs and conformance checks.

Do I need a separate license for Appian's process mining features?

Process HQ is bundled into Appian's Advanced and Premium platform pricing tiers; it is excluded from the entry-level Standard tier, and Appian does not sell it as a stand-alone product with its own price list.

Can Appian Process Mining analyze SAP data?

Appian's own product materials show SAP-sourced record types, such as Inventory, SKU and Order Detail, connected into the Data Fabric datasets that Process HQ analyzes, using a virtual connection rather than a data migration.

What can Process HQ's AI Copilot do?

Users can ask natural-language questions of a connected dataset, and the Copilot can suggest KPIs, generate report summaries and flag irrelevant events. It is limited to datasets of 1-300 configured record types and cannot perform its own numerical calculations.

Where can Appian process mining run?

It runs on Appian Cloud and on self-managed, customer-hosted deployments, with the exception of Appian's Government Cloud, where process analysis is not available.
