Overview

DocuSign eSignature lets organizations send, sign, and manage agreements electronically from any device. Senders prepare documents by adding fields and routing rules, and recipients sign through a responsive web or mobile experience without needing a DocuSign account. The platform supports a wide range of file types (PDF, Word, Excel, plain text and others), automatic field tagging, reusable templates, bulk send, and conditional and calculated fields.

Every completed agreement carries a tamper-evident PKI seal and a full audit trail, with a certificate of completion recording each recipient action. Administrators get real-time status tracking, configurable reports, user and access controls, single sign-on, and a range of signer authentication options including access codes, SMS one-time passcodes, phone authentication, knowledge-based authentication, and government-ID verification. Electronic signatures created with the service are designed to be legally valid under the U.S. ESIGN Act, the EU's eIDAS regulation, and comparable laws in many other jurisdictions.

DocuSign integrates with more than 1,000 business applications, including pre-built connectors and endorsed integrations for major ERP and business platforms such as SAP, Oracle NetSuite, Microsoft, Salesforce, and Workday. It is delivered as a cloud service with agreement data stored in one of five regional data centers (U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia, or Japan), and it maintains a broad set of security and compliance certifications.

Common use cases

  • Sales teams closing contracts and order forms directly from a CRM or ERP
  • Procurement teams executing purchase orders and vendor agreements
  • HR teams handling offer letters and onboarding paperwork
  • Finance and legal teams routing agreements for multi-party approval and signature
  • Life-sciences organizations needing 21 CFR Part 11-compliant signatures
  • Customer onboarding flows replacing paper or static PDF forms
  • Real estate, financial services, and other document-heavy industries

Strengths & considerations

Strengths

  • Large catalog of more than 1,000 pre-built integrations across CRM, ERP, HR, and productivity tools
  • Broad, independently audited compliance coverage (ISO 27001, SOC 1/2, PCI DSS, FedRAMP, 21 CFR Part 11 module, eIDAS QSCDs)
  • Regional data residency across five data-center regions (U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia, Japan)
  • Signing experience localized in 44 languages with use across 180+ countries
  • Wide range of signer-authentication methods up to government-ID verification
  • Endorsed/validated integrations with SAP (SAP Endorsed App) and NetSuite (SuiteApp)

Considerations

  • Pricing is a frequent point of criticism in reviews, particularly for small teams or low-volume users
  • Standard plans meter usage by an annual envelope allowance (e.g., 100 envelopes per user per year), which can constrain high-volume use
  • Some reviewers note limited in-app PDF editing and document-customization options
  • Advanced capabilities can feel complex for users who only need basic signing
  • Some authentication and delivery options (e.g., ID verification, SMS) carry per-use add-on costs
