Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management covers production orders, routings, resource scheduling and shop-floor reporting through its job card interfaces, and includes Manufacturing Execution functionality for time and attendance and production registration. For manual operations with lot-level traceability, that is often the whole requirement.

The MES case begins where machines and regulation do. Talking to equipment every few seconds, guiding an operator through an enforced sequence, holding serialised as-built genealogy for a recall, or producing electronic batch records for a regulated process — none of these are things an ERP production module attempts, and no amount of configuration closes that gap.

What does Dynamics 365 cover on the shop floor?

D365 Supply Chain Management handles production orders, routings and operations, material consumption and backflushing, resource and capacity scheduling, production costing, and shop-floor registration through job card device and terminal interfaces where operators report progress, time and quantities. Business Central covers production orders and routings more simply. Neither provides real-time machine connectivity and OEE from live equipment signals, enforced digital work instructions with operator certification checks, serialised as-built genealogy, or electronic batch records — the execution-layer capabilities that define MES rather than extend ERP.

Where should the boundary sit between Dynamics and an MES?

Dynamics owns planning, costing and the financial record; the MES owns execution and the plant-floor record of what actually happened. Dynamics releases the production order and holds standard costs; the MES dispatches it, captures actual times, machine data and quality results, and reports completions back. Duplicating production order status in both systems is what makes these integrations expensive to run and difficult to trust.

Do you need an MES for Business Central manufacturing?

BC's manufacturing is lighter than F&O's, so the gap is wider — but BC customers are usually smaller manufacturers where the honest question is whether shop-floor complexity justifies any MES at all. If operations are manual with lot-level traceability, BC production orders plus disciplined process is frequently sufficient. Machine integration or serialised traceability requirements change that regardless of company size.

How do MES products integrate with Dynamics 365?

Production orders, BOMs, routings and item data flow from Dynamics; completions, material consumption, actual times and quality results flow back. F&O uses Dataverse and OData; BC uses its API. Ask which Dynamics version the connector is certified against and who runs it in production at your plant count — MES connectors are more bespoke than most categories, and reference customers matter more than documentation.
