Overview

NMI is an embedded payments enablement platform that provides the infrastructure for accepting, managing and moving money across card, bank and real-time payment rails. Rather than selling directly to merchants, NMI works exclusively through partners: independent sales organisations (ISOs), banks, payment facilitators and software/SaaS companies, who embed NMI's gateway and merchant-management tools into their own branded offerings. The company is headquartered in Schaumburg, Illinois, and is backed by private equity investors Insight Partners, Francisco Partners and Great Hill Partners.

The platform spans three product lines. NMI Payments and the underlying Payment Gateway handle payment acceptance across ecommerce, in-person, mobile and unattended/self-service channels, with tools such as a Virtual Terminal, hosted checkout pages, recurring billing, QR-code payment links, tokenised Customer Vault storage, Level III Advantage rate optimisation for B2B/B2G card transactions, and Point-to-Point Encryption. Merchant Central (formerly IRIS CRM) is a payments CRM covering the merchant lifecycle from sales pipeline and automated underwriting through boarding, residuals management and support. For accounting-software connectivity specifically, NMI's Bill Connect integrates invoicing and payment collection directly into QuickBooks and Xero, automating invoice-to-payment reconciliation.

In 2026 NMI acquired Fee Navigator, adding AI-powered merchant pricing and portfolio-analysis tools, and acquired account-to-account payments provider Dwolla, extending the platform from card acceptance into ACH, real-time payments, FedNow and payout rails for use cases such as marketplace payouts, loan disbursements and B2B payments. NMI reports connecting to 150+ payment processors and 235,000+ certified devices, supporting 1.2 million+ active merchants and roughly $700 billion in combined annual payment volume.
