ERP Implementation Companies: Types, Costs and How to Choose (2026)

Last reviewed: July 26, 2026ERP Research8 min read

A 2026 guide to ERP implementation companies — the boutique, Tier-2 and global systems-integrator tiers, what they charge, and how to vet a partner.

An ERP implementation company is a professional-services firm that configures, deploys and supports ERP software on your behalf. They fall into three tiers — boutique specialists, Tier-2 national firms, and global systems integrators — differing by client size, geographic reach, cost and the breadth of transformation they can deliver.

Updated July 2026. This guide explains what these firms do, how the tiers compare, how much they charge, and how to vet one. Once you know the type you need, see our directory of 50+ ERP implementation partners to shortlist named firms by product and geography.

What is an ERP Implementation Company?

An ERP implementation company (also called an ERP partner, ERP consultancy or ERP systems integrator) takes an ERP product — such as SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics 365, NetSuite, Sage or Acumatica — and turns it into a working system for your business. That covers requirements gathering, process design, configuration, data migration, integration with your other systems, testing, training, go-live and post-live support.

Most ERP vendors sell software but do not implement it directly; they rely on a channel of certified partners. Choosing the right partner is often more decisive to project success than the software itself, because the same product can be delivered brilliantly or badly depending on the team behind it.

Types of ERP Implementation Companies

There are different types of ERP implementation companies on the market, each suited to different project sizes, budgets and levels of complexity. The table below summarizes the three tiers; the sections that follow explain each in detail.

Boutique ERP Implementation Companies

Boutique firms typically serve companies with 10–500 employees within a limited geography. They usually implement a single ERP product plus complementary tools such as analytics and industry bolt-ons, and often specialize in one or two verticals.

Their strength is depth: a boutique that has delivered your exact product in your exact industry dozens of times will move faster and hit fewer surprises than a generalist. The trade-off is scale — a boutique may lack the bench strength for a multi-country rollout or a program that spans many parallel workstreams, and key-person risk is higher when the team is small.

Tier-2 / National ERP Implementation Companies

Tier-2 firms sit between the niche boutique and the global integrator. They typically serve mid-market and lower-enterprise organizations of 200–2,000 employees, often across a whole country and sometimes several. They can staff several workstreams at once — configuration, data migration, integration, change management — which makes them a good fit when a project is too complex for a boutique but does not need (or cannot justify) a global integrator's price tag.

Many Tier-2 firms hold advanced partner status with one or two vendors and bring repeatable, industry-specific accelerators that shorten timelines. This tier is where most successful mid-market ERP programs are delivered.

Global Systems Integrators

The largest ERP implementation companies are global systems integrators that enable enterprise-wide transformation. This tier includes Accenture, Deloitte, Capgemini, IBM and PwC. They typically serve global or multinational companies of 1,000+ employees up to the Fortune 500, delivering multi-country, multi-entity rollouts with deep change-management, program-governance and system-integration capability.

Their reach and methodology are unmatched for large, complex programs, but they command the highest rates and can be less agile for a single-site mid-market project. For most companies under a few hundred million in revenue, a Tier-2 firm delivers comparable outcomes at a fraction of the cost.

Implementer vs Reseller vs Systems Integrator

These terms overlap and are often used loosely, but the distinction matters when you sign a contract:

  • Reseller (VAR) — primarily sells you the software license and may resell hosting; some resellers also implement, but a pure reseller hands off delivery. Their revenue leans on the license margin.
  • Implementation partner / consultancy — delivers the project: design, configuration, data, testing, training and support. Many mid-market firms are both reseller and implementer.
  • Systems integrator (SI) — a large implementation firm that also integrates ERP with your wider technology estate (CRM, MES, e-commerce, data platforms) across a multi-system, often multi-vendor landscape.

Ask any prospective firm which of these roles they will actually play on your project, and who holds accountability for go-live success.

How to Choose and Vet an ERP Implementation Company

Once you know which tier fits your size and complexity, work through a structured evaluation. The questions below separate firms that will deliver from those that will over-promise.

1. Choose your ERP product first

Your shortlist of implementation companies flows from your product choice, because most partners specialize. If you have not yet selected a product, start with your ERP selection criteria and build your requirements with our free wizard, or speak to an advisor for free to compare and shortlist solutions.

Which ERP solutions do you specialize in?

Most ERP implementation companies specialize in one solution; some implement several. Understand a partner's core competency before signing — a firm that "does everything" often masters nothing. Look for depth in your specific product and edition.

How many ERP implementations have you completed?

A simple but revealing question that quantifies real experience. Ask specifically how many they have completed on your product, in your industry, and at your company size — not just their all-time total across every technology.

Which companies do you typically serve?

You want to sit in the middle of a partner's customer base, or toward the larger end. Too small and you risk being deprioritized; too large and they may lack the methodology and bench to serve you. Ask for their typical client revenue and headcount range.

Can I speak to one of your customers?

A reference call with at least one comparable customer is essential. Partners forward their best references, so probe for detail: was the project on time and on budget, what went wrong, and how did the firm respond when it did.

What is your resourcing model?

Understand whether delivery is onshore, offshore or blended, and who specifically will be on your team. Onshore-vs-offshore mix affects cost, quality, communication and timezone overlap. Ask to meet the named lead consultant, not just the sales team.

What is your availability and resource utilization?

Your project only lands on time if the partner has the right people free at the right moments. Overbooked firms cause delays; a firm with too much idle capacity can be a warning sign. Confirm named resources and start dates in writing.

Have you implemented ERP for my competitors or peers?

Relevant industry and peer experience is valuable, but verify it independently. Partners put their best references forward, so nothing beats a first-hand review from a trusted contact in your network who has actually used the firm.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do ERP implementation companies charge?

Fees depend on tier, scope and product. Boutique firms typically run $120–$220 per hour, Tier-2 firms $180–$300, and global integrators $250–$500+. Total projects range from around $30,000 for a small single-entity deployment to $2M+ for mid-market and $50M+ for global enterprise programs. See our ERP implementation cost breakdown for a full model.

How long does an ERP implementation take?

Most implementations take 4 to 18 months. A small cloud deployment for one entity can go live in 3–6 months; a mid-market rollout usually runs 6–12 months; and a multi-country enterprise program can take 18 months or more. Timeline is driven by scope, number of entities, data quality, integrations and how quickly your team makes decisions.

What is the difference between an implementation partner, a reseller and a systems integrator?

A reseller primarily sells the software license. An implementation partner delivers the project — design, configuration, data, testing, training and support. A systems integrator is a large implementation firm that also connects ERP to your wider technology estate. Many mid-market firms fill more than one role, so confirm which your chosen firm will actually perform.

How do I vet an ERP implementation partner?

Confirm certified depth in your specific product and industry, ask how many comparable projects they have completed, take at least two reference calls, meet the named delivery lead (not just sales), and clarify their resourcing model and availability. Compare two or three firms on a like-for-like scope rather than accepting the first proposal.
