Overview

Azure AI Document Intelligence (formerly Form Recognizer, and now part of Microsoft's Foundry Tools / Content Understanding capabilities) is a machine-learning-based OCR and intelligent document processing service. It extracts printed and handwritten text, tables, key-value pairs, selection marks, and document structure from forms and documents, returning structured, business-ready output through REST APIs and SDKs for .NET, Python, Java, and JavaScript.

The service is organized into three model families. Document analysis models (Read for text/OCR, Layout for text, tables, and structure) provide general extraction. Prebuilt models handle common business documents out of the box -- including invoices, receipts, bank statements, checks, pay stubs, contracts, identity documents, health insurance cards, and US tax forms (W-2, 1098, 1099, 1040) and US mortgage forms -- without any training. Custom models (custom neural, custom template, custom composed, and custom classification) are trained on a customer's own labeled documents to extract fields specific to their use cases or to route mixed document batches.

For ERP and finance teams, the invoice and receipt models are the most relevant entry points: they extract vendor and customer details, line items, totals, tax, and dates that can feed accounts-payable and expense workflows. Because the service is a Microsoft cloud product, it connects natively to Power Automate, Power Apps, and Dynamics 365 through a first-party connector, and it can also be deployed as a Docker container -- including in fully disconnected/on-premises environments under a Microsoft licensing arrangement -- for data-residency-sensitive scenarios.

Common use cases

  • Automating accounts-payable invoice capture into ERP/finance systems
  • Expense management via receipt extraction
  • Bank statement and check processing for reconciliation and lending
  • KYC and identity verification from passports, ID cards, and driver's licenses
  • US tax form and mortgage document processing
  • Pre-processing documents into structured chunks for RAG / search pipelines
  • Routing mixed document batches with custom classification

Strengths & considerations

Strengths

  • Native first-party integration with Power Automate, Power Apps, and Dynamics 365
  • Broad library of prebuilt models for financial, tax, mortgage, and identity documents
  • Container deployment supports fully disconnected/on-premises processing for data-residency needs
  • Strongly typed, normalized field output (dates, currency, addresses) directly from prebuilt models
  • Backed by Azure's enterprise compliance and global region coverage

Considerations

  • Pro-code service: heavier developer effort than no-code AI Builder for citizen developers
  • Many prebuilt financial, tax, and mortgage models are US-specific
  • Free (F0) tier limits responses to the first two pages and 4 MB files; production needs the paid S0 tier
  • Disconnected container use requires a strategic partnership/licensing arrangement with Microsoft
  • Add-on features (high resolution, formulas, font, barcode) incur additional per-page costs

Azure AI Document Intelligence — frequently asked questions

Is Azure AI Document Intelligence the same as Form Recognizer?

Yes. Form Recognizer was rebranded as Azure AI Document Intelligence, and it is now part of Microsoft's Foundry Tools / Content Understanding capabilities. Existing connectors and APIs may still reference the Form Recognizer name.

Does it integrate with Dynamics 365 and Power Platform?

Yes. A first-party connector makes the service available in Power Automate and Power Apps, which are commonly used to push extracted data into Dynamics 365 workflows. There is no separate certified turnkey ERP module -- integration is built through flows or the REST API.

Can it run on-premises?

Yes. The service can be deployed as a Docker container, including fully disconnected environments with no internet connectivity, though disconnected use requires a licensing arrangement with Microsoft.

How is it priced?

Pricing is pay-as-you-go per page, with rates that vary by model type (Read OCR, Layout, prebuilt models, custom extraction). A free F0 tier is available with page and file-size limits; commitment-based pricing is available for high-volume workloads.

What document types does it handle out of the box?

Prebuilt models cover invoices, receipts, bank statements, checks, pay stubs, contracts, identity documents, health insurance cards, US tax forms, and US mortgage forms. Custom models can be trained for any other document type.
