Overview
IBM Cognos Controller is IBM's financial consolidation and reporting application, addressing the extended close, consolidate, report and file process for the office of finance. IBM formally renamed the product line "IBM Controller" with the 11.1.x release (generally available since October 2024), dropping the "Cognos" prefix from its marketing name, though the underlying product, documentation history and vendor community still commonly refer to it as Cognos Controller. It remains an actively sold and supported IBM product, distinct from IBM's Cognos Analytics BI tool and IBM Planning Analytics (TM1) planning tool, with which it natively integrates.
The application is built to be owned and operated by finance users rather than IT: entities, account structures, consolidation rules and report definitions are configured without custom code. It handles data collection and validation (via Microsoft Excel forms or the browser-based "Controller Web" interface), currency conversion, minority-interest calculations, intercompany and capital eliminations, allocations, advanced formula calculations, and user-defined business rules for non-standard consolidation steps. A centralized audit trail tracks data changes, submissions, approvals and period locks for internal and external audit requirements, and the product ships with 260+ prebuilt standard reports plus support for IFRS, US GAAP, local GAAPs and other regulatory reporting regimes.
IBM Controller is available as a subscription-based cloud offering or as an on-premises deployment, and is sold both directly by IBM and through IBM Business Partners (resellers such as Aramar, Budgeting Solutions and CTI Global handle much of the implementation and support work in practice).
