What is 3PL (Third-Party Logistics)?

A 3PL is an outsourced provider that handles logistics functions such as warehousing, fulfillment, and transportation on behalf of a company.

Definition

Third-party logistics (3PL) refers to outsourcing some or all of a company's supply-chain operations to a specialist provider. Typical services include warehousing, order fulfillment, pick-pack-ship, freight transportation, returns processing, and customs brokerage. Companies use 3PLs to scale capacity, reach new geographies, and avoid the capital cost of owning warehouses and fleets. Because the 3PL holds and moves the customer's inventory, accurate data exchange between the two parties' systems is essential.

How 3PL Works in ERP

ERP systems integrate with 3PL platforms through EDI, APIs, or batch files to send outbound orders and receive back shipment confirmations, tracking numbers, and inventory balances. The ERP usually treats the 3PL warehouse as one or more virtual locations so inventory held there is visible alongside owned stock. Reconciliation processes compare ERP records to the 3PL's reported on-hand quantities to keep the two systems in sync.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a 3PL and a 4PL?

A 3PL executes physical logistics services such as warehousing and transportation, often for specific lanes or facilities. A 4PL acts as an orchestrator that manages multiple 3PLs and the broader supply chain on the client's behalf, typically without owning assets. In short, a 4PL manages the providers while 3PLs do the operational work.

How does inventory stay accurate when a 3PL holds the stock?

The ERP models 3PL-held inventory as a distinct location and exchanges transactions with the provider's WMS for receipts, shipments, and adjustments. Regular reconciliations compare the ERP balance to the 3PL's reported on-hand quantity to catch drift. Reliable EDI or API integration is what keeps the two systems aligned in near real time.
