Overview
Arena PLM/QMS is a cloud-native product lifecycle management and quality management platform for manufacturers of complex, regulated products, sold as "Arena, a PTC Business" since PTC's $715 million acquisition of Arena Solutions closed in January 2021. Arena launched in 2000 (originally as Bom.com) and describes itself as the first cloud-native, multi-tenant SaaS PLM vendor, predating most competitors' move to the cloud by well over a decade.
The platform centers on a single product record -- items, BOMs, documents and engineering changes -- that Arena QMS links directly to quality records such as Device History Files, Device Master Records, CAPAs, nonconformances and complaints, so quality data does not live in a disconnected system. It also covers supply chain collaboration through supplier and partner portals, requirements management, and compliance workflows for export control (ITAR/EAR) and environmental regulations. A separate AWS GovCloud edition targets government and defense customers.
Arena is aimed at electronics, medical device, aerospace/defense and other hardware manufacturers who need design controls and traceability alongside product development. It reports over 1,500 customers, including Sonos, Rivian, Axon, Nutanix and AbbVie, and connects to CAD tools (SOLIDWORKS, Altium, Autodesk, Siemens NX, Cadence, and PTC's own Onshape and Creo) and ERP systems (NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics) through a marketplace of prebuilt connectors and a public REST API.

Features & capabilities
Product Lifecycle Management (PLM)
Centralizes the product record -- items, BOMs, documents and changes -- across design and manufacturing.
- Bill of Materials (BOM) management, including multilevel and PCBA BOMs
- Engineering change management (ECO/ECR workflows)
- Document management with version and revision control
- Cross-disciplinary collaboration across electrical, mechanical and software teams
- BOM comparison with visual diffing between revisions
- Project management tools for NPI/NPD programs
- 3D CAD visualization (Enterprise tier)
- Analytics and reporting on product and change data
Quality Management System (QMS)
Connects quality records directly to the product design so DHFs, DMRs and CAPAs stay linked to the BOM that produced them.
- Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) tracking
- Nonconformance report (NCMR) management
- Complaint handling
- Device History File (DHF) and Device Master Record (DMR) management
- Training records and competency tracking
- Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) control
- Supplier quality management (Enterprise tier)
- Arena Validate for FDA 21 CFR Part 11 electronic signatures
Supply Chain Collaboration
Extends the product record to suppliers and contract manufacturers with role-based, permissioned access.
- Supplier and partner portals
- Supply Chain Intelligence for part risk and sourcing visibility
- Design-for-manufacturability collaboration with contract manufacturers
- Role-based external user access
- Real-time change notifications to supply chain partners
Compliance & Regulatory Management
Built-in workflows for the export-control and quality regulations that electronics, medical device and aerospace/defense manufacturers must meet.
- ITAR/EAR export control management
- Environmental compliance tracking
- Requirements management with traceability
- Design controls
- Issue management
- Software validation records
- ISO 13485 and FDA 21 CFR Part 820/Part 11 support via Arena QMS

- Coordinating design-for-manufacturability reviews with an offshore contract manufacturer
- Tracking CAPAs and supplier nonconformances for an ISO 13485-certified device maker
- Managing ITAR/EAR export-controlled data for an aerospace/defense hardware program
- Syncing released BOMs and change orders from Arena into NetSuite or SAP for production planning
- Onboarding a fast-growing hardware startup off spreadsheets onto a structured PLM system
Strengths & considerations
Strengths
- One of the first cloud-native, multi-tenant SaaS PLM platforms, live since 2000, well before most competitors moved to the cloud
- Unifies PLM and QMS in a single system so quality records (CAPAs, DHFs, DMRs) stay natively linked to the BOM and change history that produced them
- Backed by PTC's wider digital-thread portfolio (Onshape CAD, Windchill, Creo) since the 2021 acquisition
- Broad Integration Marketplace spanning CAD (SOLIDWORKS, Altium, Autodesk, Cadence), ERP (NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Dynamics) and business apps (Salesforce, Jira, Slack)
- Dedicated AWS GovCloud edition for government and defense customers with ITAR data-handling needs
Considerations
- No published pricing -- every paid PLM and QMS tier requires a sales quote
ERP integrations
Sold by Arena and delivered by a certified partner; transfers released BOM, item and change order data into NetSuite for production planning, configurable as unidirectional or bidirectional
Exports BOM, change order, item master and manufacturing part information from Arena to SAP when a change order is released
Oracle ERP integration available through Arena's partner marketplace
Marketplace listing also covers Dynamics AX, NAV and GP
Pricing
Free Trial tier available for both PLM and QMS. Paid PLM tiers are Launch and Enterprise; paid QMS tiers are QMS and Enterprise QMS. A separate AWS GovCloud edition (Free Trial, Launch, Enterprise) is offered for government customers. All paid tiers require contacting sales for a quote; cost is driven by modules, workspaces, automations and users. Get an independent shortlist with pricing guidance below.

Arena PLM/QMS — frequently asked questions
Does Arena PLM integrate with ERP systems like NetSuite and SAP?
Yes. Arena's Integration Marketplace includes prebuilt connectors for NetSuite, SAP and Oracle, plus a marketplace listing covering Microsoft Dynamics AX, NAV, GP and Business Central. These connectors transfer released BOM, item master and change order data from Arena into the ERP for production planning.
What is Arena QMS used for?
Arena QMS manages closed-loop quality processes -- CAPAs, nonconformances, complaints, training records, SOPs and Device History Files/Device Master Records -- and links them directly to the product record in Arena PLM, which it markets as support for FDA 21 CFR Part 820/Part 11 and ISO 13485 requirements for medical device makers.
Who owns Arena Solutions?
Arena is a wholly owned business unit of PTC Inc. (NASDAQ: PTC), which completed its $715 million acquisition of Arena Solutions in January 2021. It is marketed as "Arena, a PTC Business" alongside PTC's other SaaS product-development tools, including Onshape.
Is Arena PLM/QMS pricing published?
No. Arena offers a free trial for both PLM and QMS, but its paid tiers -- Launch and Enterprise for PLM, QMS and Enterprise QMS for QMS -- all require contacting sales for a quote.
Does Arena support government or defense manufacturers?
Yes. Arena offers a separate AWS GovCloud edition of PLM (Free Trial, Launch and Enterprise tiers) alongside export-control (ITAR/EAR) management features aimed at aerospace and defense manufacturers.
