NetSuite MRP vs. NetSuite Demand Planning

NetSuite MRP and NetSuite Demand Planning are related but distinct. Demand Planning answers how much will we need; MRP answers what should we order, and when, to cover it. Demand Planning produces the forecast; MRP consumes that forecast, nets it against supply and inventory, and emits time-phased planned orders. You generally need both — Demand Planning is a prerequisite feature for meaningful supply planning.

In practice, planners run Demand Planning first to build and adjust the forecast, then run supply planning to translate it into the action messages they work each day.

When NetSuite MRP Isn't Enough

NetSuite MRP is strong at material planning for make-to-stock and standard make-to-order manufacturing, but it is not an advanced planning and scheduling (APS) system out of the box. Its default supply planning assumes effectively infinite capacity — it schedules against lead times, not against a finite view of constrained work centers — so high-mix, capacity-constrained shops that need finite scheduling, real-time constraint optimization, or complex sequencing usually add the Advanced Manufacturing module or a specialist APS tool. Very high-volume MRP runs can also be slow, and deeply engineer-to-order or process-manufacturing scenarios (co-products, by-products, potency) may need configuration work or third-party SuiteApps.
